Crayola Bulk Gold and Silver Crayons

Before Crayola came out with Metallic Effects crayons they sold the Metallic Effect box which was two of each gold, silver, and copper in a box. In 1995 Crayola put gold and silver in bulk crayon boxes. They still do this today, but they are not in these cool boxes. The boxes are different from the regular boxes in they are white with a dark green border.

Crayolet Colored Drawing Crayons No. 14

The Crayolet Line started at Binney & Smith in 1910. It ran until 1918 and then was brought back in 1930 and survived until 1978. Crayola had many different product lines during their beginnings as a company. Crayola or Binney & Smith were experimenting with different formulations of crayons at this time and marketing techniques. I think they were trying to find their niche in the art world.

On the back of this box it says, "CRAYOLET and CRAYOLA should not be confused. Crayolet crayons are the best in their particular class, just as Crayola crayons are the standard for highest quality." What does all this mean? I think it means the crayons are different formulas. The Crayolet's are the best in their class? But was was their class? At this time of this box production 1941 Crayola had 9-10 other types of crayon boxes out there also; Besco, Durel, "Perma", Spectra Pastel, Gold Medal and lots more "drawing crayons". (Thank you Ed Welter for info on boxes from these years)

Spectra Pastel Crayons No. 15

This is the Trade Spectra Mark Pastel Crayon No. 15 box. What struck me about the box was how pretty the crayons were.  The Spectra box was a special box with Gold Medal crayons for every day use as seen on the back of the box made in the pastel colors. I was super lucky to get my hands on this box. It is one of my oldest boxes. Crayola first introduced the Spectra line in 1905. There was another box version in 1910 when it was changed to No. 15. This is the 1915 box design. The line was discontinued in 1936.

Crayola Special Brightest Collection Crayons: What's Inside the Box

The Crayola crayons Special Brightest Collection box is somewhat of a conundrum for me. At the time Crayola had fluorescent crayons. It does not include all the fluorescent crayons either. On the back it says, "This Special Brightest Collection gives you 24 of the brightest Crayola crayons together in one box." I do not know how they decided a crayon was bright, but there it is. 4 new colors, vivid violet, pink flamingo, caribbean green and sunset orange were introduced in this box and have New Color on their wrapper with streaks around the new color. I really like the design.

Giant Chest of Crayons: What's Inside the Box with Torch Red

Crayola came out with the Giant Chest of Crayons 120 count crayon box in 1997. It was one of the first times Crayola put 120 crayons in a box. Crayola still continues delivering crayons in this method today. Inside there is a crayon sharpener, on 48 count box and 2 24 count boxes. They used standard crayon boxes instead of sleeves. Obviously the boxes did not contain the normal 24 and 48 crayons found in the box, otherwise there would be duplicates. The change to sleeves did not happen until the 2010's.

This box is especially significant because it contains torch red, a color that was not around for very long and later changed to scarlet. When I received this box in the mail along with a whole bunch of other crayon boxes. The 24 and 48 crayons had been separated and I thought did not have it :( I searched through about the 100 boxes I received and was super happy when I finally found it!

Crayola Glow in the Dark Crayola Crayons

Crayola came out with the glow in the dark crayons in 1994. The concept was all thee crayons would glow in the dark. The back of the box says it comes with 7 colors and 1 colorless crayon. All the crayons glow yellow in the dark. The crayons need to be charged by placing it under light for 15 seconds. It is interesting to note that Crayola encouraged secret messages to friends. They said "create surprise message and picture cards for your friends! On the inside, write a message or draw a surprise picture with the colorless crayon." I was so excited to pick up this pack of crayons.

The 1997 box added yellow glowing crayons and also a black outliner.

Crayola Pooh Crayons

Crayola came out with the Washable Pooh crayon line in 1995. They all feature characters from Winnie the Pooh. The pictures on the crayons make the most sense when they are vertical. Crayola decided to uniquely name these crayons with fun names; Red Balloon, Huggable Bear Orange, sunshiny Yellow, Springtime Meadow Green, Blustery Blue, Pouncy Purple, Whoo Brown, Storm Cloud Black. These crayons are also labeled as No-Roll crayons with a hexagonal shape.

Crayola Retro Colors Crayons

Crayola released the Retro Colors box in 1999. They renamed some classic colors and gave them hippy names such as flower power pink and woodstock mud brown. I love they embraced an era and named colors after the era.
