36 Posca Oil Based Colored Pencils

These are 36 uni Posca Pencils. They are oil based pencils, 4.0mm thick lead. On the Posca website it says these have a creamy glide with vivid colors. They are certainly vivid. They can be layered, blended and the website says they are fade resistant. I am not sure how lightfast they are. I do not think they have been verified lightfast because there are no numbers. And when something is lightfast it has been tested and there is documentation for the customer.

Find the Posca Pencils at Blick.

Posca says they can also be used on various surfaces. I would like to try it. I used them on black paper above and black paper below. The colors are very opaque and keep their color on the black paper something not all art supplies do. I think it would be interesting to compare these to their paint marker counter parts and see if the colors match.

Here is the box for pencils. They come in a plastic case and then three plastic trays that stack on one another. I photographed it without the outer plastic, but to keep the trays from falling apart I keep them in the outer plastic.

The pencils unfortunately do not have the name of the pencil on them which is disappointing. The pencils are about $1 each, midrange for art supplies. I would think the company could put the name of the color on the pencil.

Here is the outer plastic. Another reason to keep it is the color names are on the back of the plastic case as well as the description of the pencil. Overall these pencils were really fun to use. I wish the names were on the pencils and there were more colors.

Derwent Chromaflow 150 Coloured Pencils Colors, Swatches and Review

Derwent has offcially challenged Prismacolor 150 colors. Derwent came out with the Chromaflow coloured pencils a few years ago. This year in 2024 they announced 150 Chromaflow Coloured pencils! I first saw the set at Creativation and put it in my video. So many people were excited for the big new set.

Why do people love them so much? They are a soft core wax based based color pencil with a smooth texture and laydown, rich and vibrant colors and blendable. They have a little smaller core size than other Derwent colored pencils 3.5mm. From Derwent they are Blendable 5/5, Color Intensity 4/5, Point Strength 4/5 and Layering 4/5.

This blog post contains affiliate links.

In comparision to their other pencils they are softer than Procolour, Coloursoft has a more rapid laydown. The Lightfast have a larger and stronger pencil core, are 100% lightfast and are rich and creamy because they are oil based. The laydown and vibrancy of Chromaflow is better than Acadamy.

Colors

In the list below each color has a name and a number. I put the lightfasteness rating next to to the color number. The colors are on a gray wool scale with 1 being the worst and 8 being the best. Derwent said these pencils have an 88% lightfasteness rating. I think that means that 88% of the pencils have an acceptable lightfast rating. The colors also did really well on dark paper except the super dark colors.

The full list of colors in the 150 Chromaflow coloured pencil set are:
  • Citrus Yellow (0010-5), Parmesan (0020-5), Lemon (0030-8), Sun Yellow (0100-8), Sunflower (0110-5), Dandelion (0120-7), Soft Yellow (0130-7), Pineapple (0140-8), Sandcastle (0150-8), Amber Gold (0200-8), Golden Sun (0300-8), Sienna Gold (0305-5), Mango (0310-7), Butterscotch (0320-7), Flame (0400-8), Clementine (0405-7), Melon (0410-7), Orange Crush (0415-7), Autumn Blaze (0420-5/6), Red Orange (00430-5), Carrot (0440-7), Cardinal Red (0450-7), Scarlet (0500-8), Pure Red (0510-5), Strawberry (0600-8), Pompeian Red (0610-5), Sangria (0620-6), Shiraz (0630-6), Turkish Delight (0640-8), Salmon (0700-8), Ash Rose (0710-7), Deep Vermilion (0720-6), Blush Pink (0800-5), Hot Pink (0810-2), Cerise Pink (0820-5), Magenta (0900-5), Jazzberry (0905-3), Ultra Pink (0910-2), Orchid (00920-1), Rose Pink (0925-2), Pink Heather (0930-2), Dusky Purple (0935-5), Midnight Mauve (0940-6), Deep Rose (0945-5), Hollywood Pink (0950-2), Wild Berry (0955-2) Mardi Gras (0960-2), Oyster (0965-5), Light Mauve (0970-2), French Mauve (0975-3), Light Heather (0980-2), Amethyst (0985-4), Mauve (0990-7), Dewberry (0995-2), Lilac (1000-3), Dark Purple (1105-7), Aztec Purple (1010-7), Picotee Blue (1111-8), Egyptian Blue (1112-8), Violet (1100-5), Midnight Purple (1110-7), Violet Blue (1120-4), Lagoon (1121-8), Peacock Blue (1122-7), Mariner (1123-5), Iris Purple (1130-3), Glaucous Blue (1140-5), Denim (1200-7), Lapis Blue (1210-5), Blue Orchid (1220-5), Periwinkle (1230-7), Carolina Blue (1240-6), Santorini (1250-6), Brilliant Blue (1260-7), Blue (1300-7), Blue Yonder (1305-6), Glacier Blue (1310-3), Deep Sea (1320-7), Light Blue (1400-5), Sea Blue (1405-7), Bondi Blue (1410-7), Orient (1411-8), Mineral Blue (1412-8), Teal (1520-7), Turquoise Green (1500-8), Caribbean Green (1501-6), Laurel Green (1502-6), Eucalyptus (1510-8), Pastel Mint (1520-7), Cactus (1530-8), Field Grey (1535-6), Obsidian Green (1540-8), Pine Green (1550-7), Basil (1600-8), Mint Leaf (01605-7), Green Meadow (1610-8), Tropical Rain (1620-8), Foliage (1700-8), Olive Yellow (1710-6), Key Lime (1720-7), Spring Bud (1730-7), Jungle Green (1740-7), Grass Green (1800-8), Olivine (1801-6), Light Olive (1802-8), Pear (1810-5), Lemon Lime (1820-8), Chai (1825-7), Pickle (1830-8, Leaf Green (1831-8), Lincoln Green (1832-6), Mocha (1840-7), Oak (1845-8), Dijon (1850-7), Saffron Mango (1855-7), Brown Sugar (1860-7), Peach Sand (1870-5), Burnt Sienna (1900-8), Spice (1910-8), Redwood (1920-7), Raisin (2000-8), Bourbon (2001-7), Nutshell (2002-8), Willow (2003-7), Liquorice (2004-8), Coffee Bean (2010-8), Natural Brown (2100-8), Biscotti (2105-7), Morning Mist (2110-8), Pebble (2120-8), Basalt Grey (2130-7), Carbon Grey (02140-5), Almond Frost (2145-8), Red Storm (2150-4), Lavender Ash (2160-4), Rose Quartz (2161-6), Fell Mist (2162-7), Moon Rock (2163-7), Slate Grey (2170-5), Winter Lake (2180-4), Oxford Grey (2190-7), Platinum (2200-8), Charcoal Grey (2210-8), Neutral Grey (2220-8), Black (2300-8), White (2400-8), Silver (2500-8), Gold (2600-8), Silver Mint (2700-5), and Ice Blue (2800-8).
I did notice some of the dark colors are super dark. Using a blender and not as much pigment I was able to draw some color out of the darker colors 935, 2004, and 2170 being examples. The blender changed some of the colors too such as 200, 300 and 305.

I was able to mix the colored pencils and blend colors and make new colors. I was also able to use an eraser, a Derwent eraser to erase the colors.

Derwent gives a bunch of tips on how to use the Chromaflow colored pencils on their website:
  • Chromaflow coloured pencils are wax based, do not use smooth paper.
  • Chromaflow coloured pencils pencils are best used when sharp otherwise the pigment will sink into the valleys.
  • Use light pressure when blending using elliptical strokes
  • Using sharp pencils reduces risk of wax bloom of Chromaflow coloured pencils. Humid conditions also cause wax bloom.
  • There needs to be enough pigment on the paper to blend Chromaflow coloured pencils.
  • White pencil can be used as a blender with Chromaflow coloured pencils, but will lose vibrancy.
  • Use blender tools and burnisher pencils to maximize the blending properties of Chromaflow coloured pencils.
  • Can use polymer erasers with Chromaflow coloured pencils.

28 NEW Derwent Inktense Colored Pencils

I received very good news at Creativation 2023 this year. Derwent expanded their line of Inktense pencils from 72 pencils to 100 colored pencils! I am very excited for the addition to the Inktense colored pencil series.

What are Derwent Inktense Colored Pencils used for? They are watercolor pencils that are permanent once they are dry. They can go on ceramics, wood, fabric and paper. Many of them are lightfast once dry and have a rating on each pencil. They are perfect for backgrounds and to use on their own for a project. The colored pencils are activated with water and turn into "ink". The pencil colors can be mixed together and activated at the same time or they can be layered after each layer has dried.

This blog post contains affiliate links.

The Derwent Inktense pencils can be used in a variety of different ways.

  • The pencil can be applied to a medium and then wetted and spread.
  • The pencil can be wet when applied to a medium.
  • A paint brush can be used to grab the pigment ink from the pencil either from another paper with a swatch or directly from the pencil lead itself.

Color Information

Here are all new colors of Derwent Inktense Colored Pencils for 2023. I have included just the new colors in the chart below. Find the chart here.

  • Amethyst 0735, Sugar Plum 0715, Pink Flamingo 0405, Persian Red 0330, Paprika 0317, Wild Flame 0313, Orange Sorbet 0255,  Mango 0245, Golden Sun 0225, Gold 0215, Lemon 0110, Lime Green 1535, Olivine 1340, Jungle Green 1410, Mint Leaf 1240, Malibu 1213, Sea Breeze 1225, Mineral Blue 1215, Dark Cerulean 1010, Denim 0835, Lapis Blue 0825, Violet Blue 0805, Nightshade 0770, Storm Dust 2107, Asphalt 2103, Burnt Umber 1903, Dark Mink 2130, Natural Brown 1907

How To Get the New Pencils

The new 28 Derwent Inktense colored pencils can be a little tricky to find in US right now. They are available in England right now, that is how I got them. Derwent tends to release products in England first and have more availability over there than they do here. For example they have a 28 tin for these and the lightfast pencils, but they have no such thing in the US.

The new 100 box of Derwent Inktense was 348 at the time of this post. I already have the 72 and do not want to pay 348 more dollars to get 28 pencils. I had to get the 28 by themselves. That is what I would highly recommend doing because otherwise it will be a lot of money. It is also cheaper to get the 100 pencils by themselves than pay 348, the pencils at the time of writing this are 2.10 per pencil.

This is the case that my 28 colored pencils came in. It is a good idea to find somewhere to store them if the tin is not purchased. That is the downside to not being able to get a tin.

The pencil pouch can be found on Amazon.

Swatch Charts

I have made a swatch chart for the 100 Derwent Inktense Colored Pencils. Click here to get the chart. There are several ways to fill in the chart. This first chart I lightly colored in the rectangle and then activated the color with water.

This next chart I did not color on the chart with the colored pencil, but I used the a supersaturated chart after this to pick up the color and fill in like a watercolor. I think this method is my favorite because there are no pencil marks.

Just for kicks and giggles I wanted to see what the colors looked like when they were super saturated. This is the chart filled in with the colored pencil pressed as hard as I could before I activated the colors. This is also what the colors would look like before they are activated. They can be used like this and not activated. Some of the lighter colors are super pretty this way. Some of the darker colors do not have much color differentiation at this point.

This is the chart with the colors activated. As with the chart before the colors were activated some of the colors are super dark, but the lighter colors are super vibrant and pretty. I did notice that the colored pencils color mark on the paper changed when the mark was activated.

What Did I Think?

When a company offers new colored pencils colors it is very important that the colors are different. Here is the first chart with the colors circled that are new. Most of the colors are different. Amethyst, Malibu, Mint Leaf, Storm Dust, amd Jungle Green are vastly different. Some of the yellow and red colors are similar to colors already available. Would I get the rest of them? Yes, because I did, but for people trying to decide look at the chart and see what colors are vastly different.

It is always a fun surprise when Crayola comes out with a new big box of colored pencils or crayons. This year in 2022 Crayola decided to combine the 32 Colors of the World with the the regular colored pencils. They added 6 new colors, 4 of them appeared in the Colors of Kindness Colored Pencil box and 2 of them are brand spanking new! 72 Derwent Inktense Colored Pencils

Derwent has a ton of colored pencils in their line up. I have tried them all and will get a YouTube video out about those soon, but if I really had to choose only two pencil sets to get from their line up I would get the Derwent Lightfast, which I did a review on already and the Derwent Inktense colored pencils. These pencils are amazing. They are watercolor pencils that are permanent once they dry. They can go on wood, fabric, ceramics, canvas and paper and will last. They are also lightfast, not quite as good as the light fast ones are, but are better than other watercolor pencils.

Here is a coloring page I colored from Johanna Basford's Worlds of Color. The pencils are quite easy to use and this can be done in a matter of minutes instead of a long time. You can see some of my pencil marks in the sky and I would redo the sky, but it was a great learning experience. A little lead from the pencil goes a long way.

I have used these in all of these ways and the effect is really cool.  Derwent also sells these as blocks. I would love try those out.

Below I have a swatch chart where I did super intense, medium intensity and nothing at all for the first swatch. I did not label them, which I realize now was a mistake. I think I will do this over again and label them so I can have a good idea of what the color will look like. I have a key, but it is not very useful if it is not on the page. It is great to see the variation in color that can be achieved with these pencils.

Here is the key.

Here are all the colors and pencils. They come in a nice metal tin and have individual spots. The color are a 4 digit number. There is one color that is a black outliner and does not activate.

Here are all the colors available in the 72 Derwent Inktense Colored Pencils.
