64, 96, 120 Count Big Box Redesign

In 2014 Crayola redesigned their 64, 96 and 120 crayon boxes featuring Tip on the box.  I have to say that I absolutely love this box design!  I was not a big fan of the previous box design. This new design really embodies the spirit of Crayola and I like how they did not include the same tip character on any of the boxes.  The are all uniquely different. It reminds me of when m&m's started adding character m&m's.  Crayola first featured Tip on the Walmart boxes and 152 Crayons in 2013.

Crayola Silly Scents Colored Pencils and Crayons: What's Inside the Box

In 2006 Crayola started the Silly Scents line.  It is definitely a distinct line and who would want to smell lots of these smells, Alien armpit, big foot feet, rotten tooth fair, and ogre odor?  They do not smell very good and some reviewers on Amazon say they smell like old perfume.  I would definitely have to say that the Magic Scent crayons are ten times better! Fresh Air is my favorite from that line. I think they were trying to avoid kids eating the crayons by making these ones, but I think they went too far in the opposite extreme.  I hope Crayola brings back scented crayons, but not these ones. They kind of remind me of the Harry Potter Jelly Belly's that imitate the Bertie Bott's Every Flavor Beans from Harry Potter, which included vomit, soap, and boogers.

*Update. Crayola has brought back this line in 2017. Usually they name new lines a new name, but this time they did not. The new line includes: wedge markers, Twistables Colored Pencils, Twistables Crayons, and Slim Markers.

The crayon wrapper is unique too, the color names and title of the crayons run horizontally instead of vertically.  They also feature a picture of the unique smelling monster.

Crayola My Color Is 8 Count: What's Inside the Box

The Crayola My Color Is series includes the colors; blue, pink, purple, green, orange, red, black and yellow. It was sold in 2015 at Target stores. The boxes included: Window Crayons, Pip-Squeak Skinnies Markers, Short Colored Pencils, Dry-Erase Crayon, Pip-Squeak Marker, Mini Twistables Crayon, and a Color Sticks Colored Pencil.

My husband bought these boxes for me for my birthday. They were expensive at 4.99 each, but I absolutely love them.  The back features quotes from kids on all the colors.  My kids really want a box.  I let my son use the window crayons, and will probably pick them up a box when they go on clearance.

An interesting note is that Crayola has trademarked the "My Color Is" name.

Staonal General Marking Crayon: What's Inside the Box

Guess what is really cool about the Staonal General Marking Crayons?  They have the same name as the original original Crayola crayons from 1902.  I only have one color so far, but I want to get them all.  Cousins Edward Binney and C. Harold Smith, ie the namesakes of Binney & Smith, developed the Staonal crayon in 1902.  Edwin went on later to develop Crayola crayons in 1903. It is so cool it is still around today, at least for now. (Check out the crayon collecting website for a more detailed history.)

Ultra Clean Washable Crayons: What's Inside the Box

The first type of Washable Crayons from CRAYOLA that I have personally seen is from 1958, there was were a couple boxes before that. I do not know if they used the same formula and ideas for later washable crayon boxes, but it is quite possible. The patent for washable crayons was published in 1999, about the same time as they published the patent for washable markers. According to the patent there are certain additives mixed with the crayons that cause them to fleck less, and they become more washable. Numerous products have been made with these "washable" crayons, but mostly geared at the very young artists.  In 2011 Crayola added washiblity to their mainstream 24 count box and then added it to many other lines in 2013.  They added Ultra-Clean and ColorMAX (both trademark) to the name, and supposedly these crayons are even brighter than normal crayons.

Crayola Silver Swirls: What's Inside the Box

The Silver Swirls box from Crayola is my favorite box ever!  The Silver Swirl line started in 1990. I think it was a failed attempt at a glitter crayon. That is what I got from reading the patent. I bought these crayons when I was really young and used them all the time.  I loved how shiny and smooth they were on the paper.  There was nothing else like it and there has not been anything like it since. Like I said these are my absolute favorite. I really wish Crayola would bring these back.

I think I have figured out why they were sadly taken out of the market. In the patent it mentions a "metal-swirl version of a Crayola® crayon which contains fine particles of aluminum; however, while this type of crayon yields a swirl effect and alters the typical pigment, such a crayon does not impart a glitter effect to a substrate." Were silver swirls the first attempt at glitter crayons?  Were they were taken off the market because they contain aluminum?

Crayola Magic Scent Crayons: What's Inside the Box

The Magic Scent line of crayons is one of my favorites from Crayola.  It was one of the first boxes I ever owned.  I still have my original box from my childhood. The magic scent line came out in 1993. The 1993 boxes featured outdoor smells and food smells. In 1994 probably due to backlash from parents whose kids ate the crayons they changed the scents to non food items. I personally like the food ones better. They just smell better.  I have also found most of the boxes on eBay.  I love all the different scents in the boxes, especially Fresh Air. All the boxes are slightly different.  The 1993 box has a strawberry and grape on the front, the 1994 16 count box has a rose and a pine tree on the front, and the 8 count box has a strawberry and grape on the front of the box.

How do they work? The US Patent 5039243, fragrance releasing crayons explains it very well. The patent says there are microcapsules on surface of the crayons, and when they the crayon is used to color the microcapsules break and the smell is produced.

4 Count Pip•Scents Washable Markers: What's Inside the Box

Crayola Pip•Scents washable markers are a big hit in my house, they are my 2 year old sons absolute favorite markers.  (As I'm writing this, he keeps pointing to the picture and saying mine, mine, mine). Crayola Pip•Scents washable markers came out in 2014. They were sold at Target except Sodas and Shakes. That one was not sold in the US for some reason. Crayola continues to add personality to their Pip•Squeaks markers.  These markers feature a face and the item associated with the foot item associated with the color. They are scented according the theme. I am so glad that Crayola keeps doing scented supplies. After the discontinuation of the Magic Scents crayons I was worried Crayola would not do anymore.  They changed the names of the crayons because they did not want children to eat them. My son has not tried to eat these, he just loves to draw with them.

Crayola 2014 4 Count Boxes: What's Inside the Box

Crayola has always made 4 count boxes, but in 2014 they came out with a fun line featuring three different boxes. The themes were glitter, Easter and neon crayons. They all have have characters, a picture and a common line with the flying character. I wonder if more of the 2014 line exists. I found the Glitter Crayons boxes at Walmart, and the Easter and Neon Crayons at the the Crayola Kansas City store. Has anyone else found any others? Please let me know, I would love to collect those too.

State Crayon Collection: What's Inside the Box

The Crayola State Crayon Collection was released in 2004. Crayola held a contest to name the 64 box colors after the states in the United States. The description on the back of the box says, "Introducing the first-ever Crayola State Crayons!  Named by crayon fans from Alaska to Wyoming an every state in between.  Each color proudly stand for one of the 50 states.  Joining the 50 state colors in this limited-edition 'State your Color' Crayola 64 Box are 12 all-American hues a 'Cherry Blossom' crayon for Washington, D.C. and a color for Puerto Rico." I was so excited to find these crayons on eBay.  I love the combination of states and colors!
