Blue Ribbon Crayola Crayon, One Hundred Billion

In 1996 Crayola celebrated in a major way by making it's 100,000,000,000 or one hundred billion crayon. To commemorate this occasion Fred Rogers, aka Mister Rogers visited the Crayola Factory in February 1996, and poured the wax for the one hundred billionth crayon. 1 million commemoration blue ribbon crayons were made and put in a special limited edition 96 count box. Ten of the blue ribbon crayons were wrapped in gold foil, the winner won a trip to the opening of the Crayola Factory and a chance to win the one hundred billionth crayon. The winner of this crayon Darlen Martin won the crayon and sold it back to Crayola for $100,000. If it had been me there would have been no way I would have given it back haha. There were also crayons wrapped in silver and red foil. The silver crayons got a giant blue ribbon crayon replica and the red ones got a plush toy. I was able to secure my hands on one of these blue ribbon crayons. It looks like they were also sold separately at the Crayola Store at the Crayola Factory. Thanks Ed Welter for your info on this!

Giant Chest of Crayons: What's Inside the Box with Torch Red

Crayola came out with the Giant Chest of Crayons 120 count crayon box in 1997. It was one of the first times Crayola put 120 crayons in a box. Crayola still continues delivering crayons in this method today. Inside there is a crayon sharpener, on 48 count box and 2 24 count boxes. They used standard crayon boxes instead of sleeves. Obviously the boxes did not contain the normal 24 and 48 crayons found in the box, otherwise there would be duplicates. The change to sleeves did not happen until the 2010's.

This box is especially significant because it contains torch red, a color that was not around for very long and later changed to scarlet. When I received this box in the mail along with a whole bunch of other crayon boxes. The 24 and 48 crayons had been separated and I thought did not have it :( I searched through about the 100 boxes I received and was super happy when I finally found it!

Crayola Crayones 48 Mexico Box: What's Inside the Box

Crayola makes crayons for other countries. Sometimes the boxes are unique some times they are not. Over the past little while Crayola has transitioned to trying to dual package some materials. Crayola has changed the wrappings to put multiple languages on the wrapper. That way they can be sold in other countries without having to change things. Crayola has made crayons in Mexico for a long time. They even have a factory there. The factory mainly focuses on large crayons, but it seems they also make some unique colors for Mexico there, colors that can not be found in the United States.

The 48 crayon box from Mexico contains colors not found in the regular US box of crayons; strawberry, apple red, mandarine orange, carrot, pineapple yellow, grass green, aqua blue, pink, and blue purple. It even has purple and violet. A normal box of crayons usually only has violet (purple). Some of the crayons feature only English names, some Spanish and English, and some Portuguese, Spanish and English.

Crayola Glow in the Dark Crayola Crayons

Crayola came out with the glow in the dark crayons in 1994. The concept was all thee crayons would glow in the dark. The back of the box says it comes with 7 colors and 1 colorless crayon. All the crayons glow yellow in the dark. The crayons need to be charged by placing it under light for 15 seconds. It is interesting to note that Crayola encouraged secret messages to friends. They said "create surprise message and picture cards for your friends! On the inside, write a message or draw a surprise picture with the colorless crayon." I was so excited to pick up this pack of crayons.

The 1997 box added yellow glowing crayons and also a black outliner.

Crayola Pooh Crayons

Crayola came out with the Washable Pooh crayon line in 1995. They all feature characters from Winnie the Pooh. The pictures on the crayons make the most sense when they are vertical. Crayola decided to uniquely name these crayons with fun names; Red Balloon, Huggable Bear Orange, sunshiny Yellow, Springtime Meadow Green, Blustery Blue, Pouncy Purple, Whoo Brown, Storm Cloud Black. These crayons are also labeled as No-Roll crayons with a hexagonal shape.

Crayola So Big Crayons

Crayola introduced the So Big Crayola crayon line in 1983. Instead of using standard crayon names they named them with fun names likes birdie Blue, and Candy Apple Red to appeal to small children. They used the strategy of fun names for the Crayola Pip-Squeak markers also. The So Big Crayons were the largest crayons that Crayola had made. It is interesting to note that the 6 count were washable and the 8 count not washable.

Crayola Retro Colors Crayons

Crayola released the Retro Colors box in 1999. They renamed some classic colors and gave them hippy names such as flower power pink and woodstock mud brown. I love they embraced an era and named colors after the era.

Crayola Color 'n Smell Crayons

I am so excited I finally got my hands on a box of Crayola Color 'n Smell crayons. Color 'n Smell crayons were a continuation of Crayola's Magic Scent line. The Magic Scent line started out with edible crayon scents, but apparently Crayola received complaints of children eating crayons and changed them to non edible scented crayons. Crayola even asked on this box of Color 'n Smell crayons what other scents people would want. Sadly this was the last scented box of actual crayons Crayola would put out. They have since come out with a Silly Scents line, but there are no scented crayons.
